For a major number of HP, Lenovo and Dell laptops/notebook users, upon upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8, they found that either the DVD Driver is not detected at all by Windows 10 or if it’s visible in device manager, then it’s not working. You might find an exclamation mark too in the device manager for your DVD Drive in the device manager. Also, if you insert in the disk in DVD ROM, it’ll flash the LED lights on it for a while, but nothing would happen. Also, if by any chance, you have the DVD ROM listed inside My Computer icons, and even Windows can send the Eject command to DVD ROM, but not able to read any inserted DVD.ย Other errors which you may find for DVD Drive in Device Status area:
The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32) Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Fix CD/DVD Drive Not Detected or Working In Windows 10
Solution 1
This solution is for those users who don’t see the DVD Drive icon in Computer or even in Device Manager. Do ensure that you’re logged in Windows with an account with administrator privileges.
Right-click on the Start menu and select “Command Prompt (admin).”
Type in the following command in Command Prompt:
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
You can copy-paste the command from above. Be careful with spaces.
Reboot your computer.
If it didn’t work, reboot and do it again. If still not, keep reading.

Solution 2
So, if the above solution didn’t work for you, probably you need to create a registry key for the DVD drive. Perform below-given steps to achieve the same:
- First, you need to ensure that the account you’re logged in with is an administrator account or has administrator privileges.
- Press Windows key + R.
- When Run command box opens, type in
regedit
and enter. - This shall open “Registry Editor” for you. Navigate to the following path in it:
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi
-
- Right-click on
atapi
, select New and then clickKey
. - Type
Controller0
and press Enter. - Now, right-click on
Controller0
key and select New > DWORD(32-bit) Value. - Type
EnumDevice1
and press Enter. - Then Right-click on
EnumDevice1
and select Modify. - Update the value to “
1
” in Value Data box and click OK. - Close Registry Editor.
- Reboot Your Computer.

- Close Registry Editor.
- Reboot your computer.
Any of the above solutions must work for you, as it has been known to work for many.
Do you have any other suggestions if this does not work. I’ve tried all these fixes and once in a while, they will work for a time or time but when the computer re-boots the next time the device disappears. Sometime the CD/DVD tray will open and other times it will not. I went through the Microsoft help desk and they eventually said it was a Dell problem and the drivers were out of date. Dell has no updated drivers. At this point, it might be easier to go back to Windows 7.
The only solution I can suggest is re-installing the current drivers you have in compatibility mode of Windows 7. First un-install, reboot and then re-install. If that didn’t worked, then probably you’ll have to wait then.
Hey just tried all three solutions. After solution 3, my computer refused to start up. It’s continually restarting.
That should not happen, as any of the solution provided above does not interfere with the booting process of the Windows. I am curious to know, how you managed to turn it ON back?
same problem here, i cant start windows now
I wish if I could help you out with it. Sometimes, the physical presence of the device is required to tackle the issues.
(THE FIX) This just happened to me. After it restarts a couple times, it’ll give you the option to click Advanced Settings, once there click on system restore and chose the most recent date before you deleted those files. It’ll take a little while to restore but it worked for me and I didn’t lose any files.
Same problem. I had to do a system restore after trying the solution 1.
Superb bro…Solution 2 works for me…thanx a ton… ๐ ๐ ๐
I tried all of these and even deleted what was already there to create everything new and no luck at all.
The drive shows up until I put in a CD or DVD into it. Then it disappears for a bit then it comes back but the drive still won’t function properly. Further the drive will work when it is attached to another computer through the USB 2.0 hookups. My Optical drive is a dvd600s-H01 5 by HP. It is an external drive and works on other windows systems below Windows 10.
Reinstall windows 10, but this time, do not keep the optical drive attached to computer during installation. This should work, but i am taking a guess here.
Thank you. Solution 1 worked.
Glad to know. You’re welcome ๐
nothing worked at all.
what do I do now??
This seems to be a problem with many. Only few lucky guys got it resolved.
Initially I thought it was a Hardware problem.. then when I checked online thousands of people had encountered the same issue.
Surely the above didn’t work… what else do I have to do??
Did you ever find a fix????
Heck yeah solution 2 fixed it. thanks
Happy to know that ๐
same issue my built in optical drive plays hide and seek at the moment, fresh install gone, did upgrade install back, had to clean install again gone, did the regedit for controller as no upper or lower filters showing came back working 2 restarts gone, uninstalled ide/atapi and all showing for optical drive came back, now gone again and nothing is fixing it, utter joke have no idea what to do aside from go back to win 8 and wasn’t too impressed with that
Wait for some time and keep regularly updating Windows. Sometimes these updates solve the issues which are being faced by so many people
Thank you. Solution 2 worked.
Brilliant ๐
Sometimes update driver won’t work, the problem is in the registry so Check this video, it worked for me i think it will work for you too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahjVAAcuUYY
I tired all but not works for me please help me another
I’ve tried all of these also. The problem i have is that it recognizes the drive, it just doesn’t recognize when there is a DVD IN the drive. it keeps saying the drive is empty.
Maybe your drive is No more usable.
i have the same problem it shows as a cd/dvd writer but for some reason after upgrade the drivers say its a cd-rom but wont read or write anything none of the solutions work this is the 3rd time its happened, when i look on events from the drive it says it was “merged” that seems to be what starts it off then between 2 days and 2 weeks later its back to working perfectly it drives me insane
Haha.. Hope your drive is working fine now. If not, update it to latest Windows 10 anniversary update.
solution 1 works in my desktop after windows 10 update. I was able to use now my dvd. tnx for information.
For DVD drive not detected problem in Windows 10 try advice from this site http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03280768.
For me Step 2: Making sure AutoPlay is set worked.
Worked for me. Thank you so much ๐
None of these worked for me. I can put the CD in and it shows up on iTunes/Media Player, but the disk spins, then slows, then spins, then slows, and just keeps repeating that and never does anything.
I haven’t been able to upload any new music since Windows 10 came out…..strongly contemplating Linux right now
I have the same problem as Gillian (December 2015) above. Deleted the 2 files in Solution 3, and now I am unable to restart Win10. It keeps going in circles, trying to repair it, nothing helps. Could deleting the 2 files (LowerLimit and UpperLimit) have anything to do with it? On the face of it, it seems to be the cause.
Any suggestions on How to fix it?
Don’t the first and second steps do the same?
Yes, variation is required for users with different level permission settings.
The third solution is a shitty one. The laptop is restarting in a continuous cycle and now I can’t even take those files to burn on another computer.
i think that there is a mistake in solution 3 because there is no “LowerFilters” registry in “{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}” folder which is marked in red… you marked/clicked folder named “{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}” instead… which one of “LowerFilters” and “UpperFilters” should i delete then?
p.s. sorry if my english is incorrect
hey i have tried all three steps but still nothing worked. help please its getting frustrating.
I wish if I may could, but this is all I know as of now.
Okay, so I tried every single one of these. I did the third solution and it opened my disc tray… I entered my disc and since it’s a movie went to the ASUSDVD app and it said there was no disc inserted. I then try to take it back out and now it’s stuck in my computer because it won’t open again. What do i do to fix this?!
Take it out forcibly. There are procedures to open stuck DVD drives. Check on Google for more information related to that.
If you people out there are smart you WONT try ANY of these terrible “tips”!
NONE of these seem to work for most people and some of these rotten tips ruined people startup file!
One trick works only for some!
Bob, you shouldn’t give people advice when you don’t know anything about operating systems, and know nothing about windows 10!
Go back to your synagogue ASAP, spin your dradle and give up on trying hard to be a tech savy genius cause honestly, you FAIL!
Please guide me with correct solutions as per you. I’ll be more than happy to add those in the article.
Thank Bro , in my computer Solution 2 worked as well ๐
I just re-installed the BIOS and everything worked fine…. Just look for the most recent version of the BIOS and install it…. Even if you have the most current version : re-install it….
As simpel as that…
Solution 2 worked for me thanks ever so much, very grateful. ๐
Solution 1 didn’t work but Solution 2 did so can play, rip and burn now. Thanks so much.
I have been struggling with these same issues for months. Tried everything suggested, yet the dvd drive only works when it wants to. Would it be better to get a laptop with win 10 natively installed instead of upgrading from win 8.1?
I also experience the laptop not booting up for several hours, then it works fine. I even tried a complete wipe and reinstall. Nothing seems to help.
Yup my pc stopped booting after doing this feels bad man
Solution 2 worked for me! Thanks for the assist!
Thanks man.
Solution 2 worked for me.
Windows 7. Dell Inspiron 1525
Thank you!! Solution 1 worked.
drive D:dvd-cd not working properly however, computer diagnostics claims no problems
I am not sure if any of these solutions apply for my situation – my DVD/CD drive is in perfect condition, however if I put a DVD in it (I experience this with only a few discs), it will show me the storage space on the DVD, but if I open the DVD’s file directory, I see nothing except a message saying “Drag folders or files here to add them to the disc.”. I know for a fact that there is data inside the DVD, but it isn’t getting detected. Anything you could suggest for this problem?
When I tried solution 3. Windows crashed and had to reinstall windows.
Please DO NOT TRY unless you 100% certain there is no other solution for you and make sure you have backed up everything before trying!!
Well now my pc has blue screen of death thanks a lot man
Hello! I have the same problem (my laptop doesn’t recognize my DVD ROM in My Computer). But the problem is, that none of these solution worked for me and my Device Manager recognizes the DVD ROM (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GUC0N) but in the wrong category. Instead of being a CD/DVD drive, it enlists it next to my Hard Drive (if I’m not mistaken, it’s called Disk Drives in English, or something like that.) I can send a screenshot about my Device Manager, if it helps. I tried to remove the hardware and put it back on, but it did not help. My DVD ROM works (if I press the button, it comes out, and goes back) but doesn’t read the disc I put in. And I don’t have a “LowerFilter” or “UpperFilter” at the given place.
Thanks!!!!!!! Worked great!!!!!!!!!
Bravo! solution 2 did it for me on first attempt
hello, unfortunately no solution worked… ๐
I have tried all three solutions offered and unfortunately none of them worked. It is as if that Win10 is not recognising the secondary sata sockets on my Asus H81M-PLUS board. I have two SSD’s connected to the first two and a CDDVDRW and a 1Tb HDD connected to the other two slower sockets. The BIOS sees them but Win10 does not. I am wondering that if I connect the two SSD’s to the slower sockets and connect the DVD and HDD to the higher speed sockets if that will work?
Solution 2 works for me, however I still cannot run CD or DVD in the drive. Dell Latitude E5430 WIN 10.
Checked the device manager now and it has:
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
Will power down and disconnect the drive power up and reconnect and see if it helps.
Solution 1 worked for me.
I have a Lenovo g50-80 but my DVD not worked in Windows 10
I copied the command in “Run” and without reboot it worked.
Thanks.
Robert Brunelle, with respect: if you’re going to write registry editor “advice”, it should always start with a “CAUTION” & make a “backup” of registry/settings BEFORE making any modifications.
Lots of folks here have reported serious outcomes from Solution 3, you’ve barely acknowledged them/the issues.
That’s not very nice.
Non of the solutions worked for me. I have a Toshiba laptop so checked what Toshiba programs were showing under the Control Panel – Programs & Features. Noticed Toshiba Recovery Media Creator, after backing-up my Computer, I deleted this program carried out a reboot, hey presto DVD service restored and showing up in “This Computer” File as DVD ( D: drive). Hope this helps.
my device don’t have upper filter what should I do ? please answer me
It Worked, Thanx
DELL BRAND (COMPUTER)
cd/dvd rom is installed but its not connected to my computer. in device manager its under “hidden files”,
you click “show hidden files” for HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GU90N DRIVE TO SHOW UP IN THE DEVICE MANGER.
COMMENT: ITS NOT CONNECTED TO YOUR COMPUTER (CODE 45)
Any solution for this problem on Lenovo T410?
Thank you it did work…. 1 solution. Everyone be safe stay home.
Hi,
many thanks, bro.
option 1 worked for me fine.
reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
Step one worked for me. Many thanks!
After upgrading an older HP AMD based laptop (14-AC100NA) to Windows 10, the DVD drive appeared under the ‘disks’ section of Device Manager and wouldn’t work. I found that installing the AMD AHCI driver resolved the problem. I found a compatible driver by searching for the hardware ID (in this case VEN_1002&DEV_4391) and using the link from DriverPack Solution.
So I had a similar issue the HP DVDRW DU8A6SH showing with an exclamation mark on it, but the E: or CD drive not showing in File Explorer.
– In Device Manager, select the drive and press the red cross to remove it.
– Restart the PC
– In Device Manager, the same error displays.
– However, when you right click and select ‘Scan for hardware changes’ and manually select the CD Rom option, the device reinstated itself (the exclamation mark disappears).
– If you run a DVD now, it loads fine.
