Fix HP Office Jet Pro Scanning Issues After Upgrading to macOS X Yosemite
Solution 1
First of all, there are some basic steps to do, which are required before going ahead to advanced troubleshooting for fixing the driver issues of HP Office Jet Pro with Mac OS X Yosemite:
If you’re already done with this step, you can skip this, as it’s required to do only one time.
First of all, we need to Reset the Printing System.
- Open System Preference by clicking on Apple Icon and selecting from the menu.
- Go to Hardware Tab, then locate Print & Fax/Scan and open it.
- When the dialog box opens, Right-click (ctrl+click) on the left panel and select “Reset Printing System.” and then click OK to confirm reset.
- It shall ask for Name and Password, type in and click OK.
This shall reset the printing system of Yosemite and these steps shall remove all Printers and Fax/Scanners from the system, but those can restored by clicking the (+) button.
Another Step is to Repair Disk Permissions
- When on the dock, open “Applications” and then click “Utilities.”
- Locate “Disk Utility” and open it.
- Select your current hard drive/partition drive on the left (which would be shown by name “Macintosh HD” for most users)
- Then click the “Repair Disk Permissions” button provided at the bottom of the dialog box.
Wait till the repair tasks are complete. Reboot your computer and then download the latest drivers of HP printers from this link (official drivers from Apple) for Mac OS X operating system and install it.
Do keep your printer connected via Ethernet during installation process.
- Now open Print & Scan settings, select “Add Printer or Scanner,” and Select the Printer you have.
- If by chance, you can’t find your printer in the selection list, then you can select “AirPrint” Driver.
Click OK, and you’re done. This should solve your scanning issue of HP Office Jet Pro with Mac OS X Yosemite. If not, then continue with Solution 2.
Solution 2
So, assuming that you still don’t manage to get the Apple “Image Capture” or “HP Scan” to work. Then here’s what you need to do:
For getting Apple’s “Image Capture” to work:
- Open “HP Utility” from Utilities.
- Open “Scan to Computer” from the dialog box.
- Check tick “Enable Scan to Computer.”
- Click OK, and you’re done enabling Apple’s “Image Capture.”
In order to get “HP Scan” working, here are the steps:
- Open “HP Scan.”
- Click the button of “Scan.”
- Open “Browse Scanners” and select “Scanner” from the drop-down list.
- “Choose an HP Scanner” dialog box would open, select “My (Bonjour)” device from it.
- That’s it. This would force HP Scan to reconnect with the scanner, and now scanning should work.
Solution 3
When on desktop, Open Macintosh HD by double-clicking on it.
Open Library Folder > Printers.
Locate the “HP” folder and then select “Move to Trash.”
If being asked to fill the Administrator name and password, do that and click OK. Wait till the process is complete.
Now, open folder of PPD’s > Content > Resources.
Locate your current printer you own from the list and right-click on it and select “Move to Trash.” Again if prompted to enter Administrator Name and Password, do that and click OK.
Come back to Desktop and empty the Trash or just delete the printer inside from the Trash.
Open Apple Menu by clicking on the Apple icon on the top-left corner and then select “System Preferences.”
Open “Print and Scan” from it.
From the “Printers” list, select your Printer you own and click (-) minus button to delete it.
This way now, you have deleted every traces of HP Printers from your computer. Now do a fresh install of HP Printer Drivers by downloading those from this link of Apple. I am sure your scanner should work now.
Solution 4
If it still doesn’t work, then you can install this “HP Easy Scan” app from Mac App Store. This app is designed to work with any Printer or Printer/Scanner. It shall offer most features which a full-fledged printer application offers like, Automatic Photo Detection, Multi-Page document processing, text recognition (OCR), and PDF File output. This app uses the Apple ICA scan protocols; hence it should be supported for most HP devices that support ICA scan drivers.

Solution 5
This solution is for those users who are using the “Scan to Email” feature and are not able to authenticate the credentials for getting this feature to work.
Please, note, to resolve the “Credentials not correct” issue, you need to turn off 2-step verification of your email in security settings. Then you should be able to create the profile with correct credentials. After you’re done creating the profile and test once if it’s working, you can turn ON 2-step verification back. If you’re not interested in turning off 2-step verification, then you can do the following steps to get it working. Below steps are for Gmail, for other email service providers like Yahoo or Hotmail, you have the only option to turn off 2-Step verification temporary.
- Log into your Gmail Email account.
- Click Email or icon in the right corner and then Account.
- Click Security.
- Under Account permissions> Access for less secure apps, click Settings.
- Enable it and click Done.
- Re-run the Scan to Email setup. This should work now.

I had to put the network settings on the HP M127fw into factory defaults. That sorted me out.
